Hundreds of Workers Suffer Chemical Exposure at Power Plant

As reported by Click2Houston, multiple people have been hospitalized after what is believed to be a chemical leak at a Fort Bend power plant. Early details indicate that around 100 employers at the W.A. Parish Electric Generating Station located in the 2500 block of Yu Jones Road were exposed to an “unknown chemical.” Several people had to be decontaminated and were hospitalized. Two workers are in critical condition.

Officials believe that the chemical may have been ammonia, but law enforcement has yet to confirm. A statement by NRG says that the incident occurred around 5:30 pm after workers notified safety personnel of an “unusual smell.” Several exposed employees reported health concerns, including having difficulty breathing. The cause of the leak is being investigated.

Symptoms Experienced After Chemical Exposure

Exposure to a toxic substance can result in serious injury. As reported by officials, workers at the power plant noted having respiratory issues, scratchy throats, and dizziness. Any chemical exposure should be considered dangerous and treated by a medical professional.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that exposure to ammonia can cause:

  • Irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swelling and narrowing of the throat
  • Coughing
  • Fluid in the lungs
  • Gastrointestinal tract damage
  • Burning of the skin
  • Corrosive injuries

Individuals exposed to ammonia or another toxic substance might be entitled to compensation. It is strongly recommended that affected workers contact a qualified personal injury lawyer to determine their legal options. A lawyer can help determine if you have a valid claim for damages and who should be held legally responsible for your injuries.
