Cities Where You Are Most Likely to Get in a Car Accident

As reported by the Houston Chronicle, the largest city in Texas has ranked 8th in the country for places with the highest number of car accidents. Forbes Advisor provided the rankings, which put Dallas and Atlanta tied for the top spots where motorists are most likely to get in a car accident in the United States.

The rankings were based on several factors, including the fatality rate per 100,000 people, the average number of years between collisions, and the relative collision likelihood.

Houston ranked 8th based on the following:

  • Fatality rate per 100,000 population - 11.5
  • Average years between collisions - 7.66
  • Relative collision likelihood - 38.1%

Reasons that Houston and other large cities regularly land in the top ten for most accidents across the country include the high rate of car dependency, limited public transportation, and heavy congestion.

Fatal Car Accident Statistics Across the U.S.

While the Bayou City may be near the top of the list for cities with the highest number of accidents, it did not make the top ten in a separate devastating area. Houston was not one of the cities with the most car accident fatalities, according to the rankings. Memphis led the nation with a fatality rate per 100,000 people of 34, while Dallas came in 8th with a fatality rate of 17.

Preventing Car Accidents in Houston

The majority of car accidents in the state are preventable, caused by driver error or negligence. Motorists in accident-prone cities can take several steps to help avoid these dangerous and often deadly collisions.

Houston drivers can help prevent car accidents by:

  • Obeying the speed limit
  • Avoiding distractions
  • Never driving fatigued or impaired
  • Driving cautiously during inclement weather
  • Following at a safe distance
  • Not changing lanes abruptly
  • Observing all traffic signals and stop signs

Even in cities with high rates of car accidents, there are several things that everyone can do to stay safe on the road. However, if you are involved in a collision, you need to speak with an attorney as soon as possible.
