REPORTS OF SEXUAL ASSAULT AT HOUSTON CAMPUSES
Police were recently searching for a man accused of sexually assaulting a woman in the bathroom at the Houston Baptist University campus. Two Houston campuses recently ranked among those with the highest violent crime rates in the state. Many students never hear about the true crime statistics at a campus.
Federal law requires universities to publish an annual security report including information about sexual assaults and abuse. Unfortunately, not all of the crimes are reported correctly, and many survivors never come forward for fear of retaliation.
Many reports of sexual assault on college campuses go uninvestigated. Even when investigated, many perpetrators are not held accountable.
COLLEGE SEXUAL ASSAULT STATISTICS
According to the Office on Women’s Health (OASH), 1 in 5 women experiences sexual assault in college. Female students are most at risk during the “first few months of their first and second semesters in college.”
As noted by RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), sexual violence is extremely prevalent on college campuses with 13% of all graduate and undergraduate students experiencing rape or sexual assault through force, violence, or incapacitation.
Female college students between the ages of 18-24 are 3x more likely to experience sexual violence, despite only 20% of female student victims in this age group reporting the crime to law enforcement.
